According to annual statements of economic interests, Compton Mayor Aja Brown earns in excess of $100,000 per year as the owner of the Brown Group.
Her “Vision for Compton” logo is heavily used to co-brand community events she holds in her official capacity as mayor.
She has hosted presidential hopeful Tom Steyer, community conversations with the mayor, and fellow council members toy drives, all while promoting her personal branding.
Brown caught the scrutiny of this blog, and mainstream media, when her nonprofit hosted the 2015 State of the City and had payments made out to Vision for Compton, as opposed to one of the many chambers of commerce, who typically host such an event.
At last night’s regular city council meeting, a long time critic made allegations that Brown’s company received a contract to collect 2020 Census data.
It is unclear if it is a conflict of interest for a sitting elected official to be hired to canvas the city they lead, but we are sure a complaint will make its way to the public integrity unit inside the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office for review.
Just as other elected officials alleged misdeeds have crossed the desk of DA Jackie Lacey’s office, it is presumed any complaints received on this allegation, will be promptly ignored.
