Asm. Reginald Jones-Sawyer’s campaign slogan is “for the people” however, the “people” find him missing in action South of the 10 freeway, A recent poll is sweeping through South Central and the top question is “who is Reggie Jones-Sawyer”? Most residents in Assembly District 59 have a hard time recognizing his name and here is a short recap of how that could have happened.
Winning 100% of the vote, in South Central, should’ve been a slam dunk for Reggie but he only garnered around 80% of the Black vote. Wanna know why?
“The demographics have shifted under his feet,” said a well-known campaign consultant who has extended political experience in defending seats held by African-Americans. “How has he solidified name recognition with the voters?”
In 2017 community outrage made the evening news when an Assembly District 59 residents uploaded the filthy conditions at the local Ralph’s supermarket on Manchester and Western. Where was Reggie?
“When community members reached out to his office to help with pushing along the remodeling of the Ralph’s Grocery store at Manchester & Western there was no support,” said Brent Page, who played a role in the $5.4 million in upgrades that were made. “At that point community members reached out to a member of the Assembly who’s district was adjacent and received assistance.”
Community events equal community engagement and name/face recognition. They are the bread and butter of political candidates to remain in touch with their constituents. Where has Reggie been?
“I personally reached out to Reggie to support a community outreach event Jazz at St Andrews which outreached to around 8,000 people in 2019 alone and was met with push back when the park was actually in his district,” said Page. “There were other Assembly Members who supported the event who don’t represent the area of where the event was held.”
Jones-Sawyer didn’t support the event as a sponsor either. Now he’s hyping up an endorsement from the area’s Congresswoman that he had to pay $6,000 to be included in her coveted Voters Guide?
This is why the democrats have to spend $2.6 million to defend Reggie’s seat. Being “Black” simply isn’t enough.
