Please look into why Compton Mayor Aja Brown and City Manager Craig Cornwell publicly said they “found” $4 million in cost savings, to address the nearly $9.8 million dollar budget deficit, then laid off an entire city department.
Mayor Brown’s office includes herself, liaison Candace Leos AND Executive Secretary Debbie Curtis why does she need TWO employees with the budget in a disarray?
City Manager Craig Cornwell office includes himself and TWO Assistant City Managers Triphenia Simmons and Michael Antwine who was recently ran out of the city of Novato?
Each council members liaisons continue with part-time employment at 60,000 a year, while all other part-time staff have been terminated. It is against personnel rules and regulations to lay-off full time staff while part time employees remain.
The state audit even concluded that the city council members didn’t need individual liaisons.
How can we afford to pay a total of eight additional people, within the city manager and council members office, who aren’t bringing in revenue to the city?
There is also discussion that City Clerk Alita Godwin’s soon to be grandchild’s mother avoided being laid off and was transferred to work in her office
Parks and Recreation Director Marvin Hunt organized a protest where he outlined in an email that lay-off notices were received and the Department of Parks and Recreation has been dismantled. COVID-19 is being used to disguise the reasons for the budget deficit. The budget was in crisis before COVID-19. Each department was initially asked to cut their respective budgets by 15%, and all departments complied. Employees are being laid off, due to budget concerns, but HR continues to hire amidst this very concern!
Aja Brown is up for re-election in April and between the shitty streets and her unwillingness to make budget cuts ACROSS THE BOARD her entire campaign slogan of “finish the work” isn’t worth the dog shit we clean up in the park.
