The Los Angeles County Democratic Party, led by Chair Mark Gonzalez, sent shockwaves throughout Los Angeles County when they failed to endorse current LA County District Attorney Jackie Lacey for a third term.
Jackie Lacey has been raked over the coals by members of Black Lives Matter, particularly, Dr. Melina Abdullah, for Lacey’s failure to prosecute law enforcement officers accused of killing unarmed Black people.
In my city, Inglewood, we are still waiting for her office to make a decision on five Inglewood Police officers who killed a couple while they were asleep. Lacey’s husband is a high school classmate of Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts Jr. and who can forget her office losing an investigation on Butts related to the city’s trash contract.
Who can forget that questionable donation made to USC, by LA County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, which ended up in his son’s non-profits bank account? USC went straight to the feds, bypassing Lacey’s office, presumably because of her close ties to the Ridley-Thomas’.
George Gascon appears to be a growing ally in the Black community, as he was the author of Prop 47, which freed a lot of Black men from jail.
Gascon was a former District Attorney in San Francisco, LAPD officer and chief of police in two major cities. While serving as DA in San Francisco, he didn’t prosecute cops who killed unarmed people either.
It is unclear if the LA County Democratic Party and/or members of Black Lives Matter are aware that Gascon’s record on police shootings is no different than Lacey’s.
Only difference is he authored and fully supported the draining of jails filled with minorities.
The unintended consequences of Gascon leading the LA County District Attorney’s office could be dangerous. We would definitely see more Black elected officials prosecuted for allegations of corruption. We would see a presumed uncooperative police force when it comes to court appearances and handling cases which isn’t necessarily beneficial to the everyday law abiding citizen.
The LA County Democratic Party should’ve sent a different message and endorsed someone else in this race. Not another Jackie Lacey in a white man’s body.
