Two Inglewood Police Officers were involved in a shooting outside of the Church of Scientology, on Market Street, which left the suspect dead and the officers wounded from gunfire. It is unclear if the suspect was disgruntled with the church. This is the second man with a sword killed by IPD.
Initial reports state the suspect, who has yet to be identified, was near the entrance of the “church” with a sword and possibly a gun. The latter has yet to be confirmed but what we do know is the two officers were shot.
2UrbanGirls has eaten at Rusty Pot Cafe on many occasions, which is directly across the street from the “church” and have always noticed an armed guard on their premises.
2UrbanGirls has issued a public records request to determine if the “security” hired to guard the church has the appropriate city issued business license and business tax certificates required to operate in the city. Otherwise, could the “church” be held liable if it is determined officers were shot by “church” related staff and not the suspect?
Church operators are VERY friendly with Mayor Butts and city council which could lead residents to assume that certain businesses don’t have to follow the Inglewood Municipal Code if they can make a phone call to the 9th floor of City Hall to circumvent enforcement.
Residents on the scene, who refused to speak on the record with 2UrbanGirls, commented that there were more non agency officers on the scene than IPD. Some from as far away as Redondo Beach.
Law enforcement personnel shared with 2UrbanGirls that whenever a call goes out code “1199” (officer down) all available agencies respond. It doesn’t necessarily mean IPD is understaffed, but they did mention that Inglewood is having a hard time recruiting officers who make it off probation.
A review of the departments social media channels shows no recruitment at local colleges and/or universities. El Camino, LA Southwest College, CSUDH, CSULB or West LA aren’t on the recruitment departments radar. Why?
How does the city have money to pay certain staff excessive bonuses, hire additional staff for an office of emergency services, and appoint an assistant city manager, when we don’t have enough building and safety staff to sign off on construction permits or police to serve 100,000 Inglewood residents, an incoming 80,000 seat football stadium and possible 20,000 seat basketball arena?
