LANCASTER, CA – Candidates for Antelope Valley Union High School District (AVUHSD) became topics of discussion on mailers sent out by an Antelope Valley Parents And Teachers group. Like clockwork Antelope Valley Press reporter Julie Drake went to the defense of her biggest client AVUHSD Superintendent Dr. David Vierra’s bosses; current board member/candidate Jill McGrady and former board member/candidate Donita Winn.
Unlike widely circulated publications like L.A. Times, AV Press Reporter Julie Drake has focused her attention on responding every detail laid out in both mailers that brings to light McGrady and Winn’s subpar track records without disclosing her payments from AVUSD and the two candidate’s individual campaigns. Antelope Valley residents are not speaking about Julie Drake being radio silent on a large billboard erected of a Board Member Amanda Parrell who isn’t up for re-election.
The AV Press receives a good amount of the district’s money for advertising, subscriptions, and it seems like to even campaign and defend handpicked board members and contractors under direction of Dr. David Vierra. Drake’s aggressive coverage of the recent mailers has some residents wondering if Drake is in fact working for the candidates under the guise of “reporting” the news for AV Press.
This amount of selective defensive reporting by AV Press on select candidates can be perceived as unreported in-kind campaign contributions and subject to investigation of Jill McGrady, Donita Winn and AV Press by California’s Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC).
