Compton residents received a generous donation from Andre Young and Jimmy Iovine totaling $300,000 with the bulk of the payments going to the Compton Chamber of Commerce run by Lestean Johnson. There are mounting concerns that the organization haven’t been good stewards of the money received to operate a food pantry. The city began paying the Chamber in June 2020, absent of a contract, until February 2021.
This isn’t the first time the city has questioned the services provided by the Chamber of Commerce.
In 2017, former City Manager Cecil Rhambo requested documents related to the 2017 Veterans Stand Down. He specifically wanted details and specifics on the numbers of persons served, the chamber’s insurance policy, and other related documents. To our understanding, the documents were never produced. A public record’s request has been initiated to retrieve those documents.
According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office, the fact that state records show the organization is not in good standing with the Franchise Tax Board doesn’t equate to criminal activity and thus their office declined to investigate.covid donations
