Is Compton Councilwoman Janna Zurita crossing the line to avoid losing the upcoming April 2019 election?
The city of Compton recently held their annual Christmas Parade which showcased students, bands and Compton elected officials. Councilwoman Zurita was quite peeved that one of her challengers was also present and openly campaigning during the event.
Michelle Chambers, Sr. Field Deputy in Asm. Mike Gipson’s office, participated in the Compton Parade ON HER DAY OFF. Her friend allowed her to ride in her car, which was authorized to be in the parade. Chambers had signage on the car that stated she was a candidate for Council District 1, which Zurita currently represents.
The city of Compton has NO rules regarding campaigning during the parade, which many candidates have done in the past. The city of Compton also has NO rules stating who can or can not be in the vehicle and/or signage on the outside of the vehicle that is authorized to be in the parade. Campaign rules prohibit elected officials, up for election, from using office funds to pay for banners on the cars. They would need to be paid for out of their campaign account.
Councilwoman Zurita has faced numerous unsuccessful recall attempts attributed to her lack of progress in District 1, her tacky behavior on the council dais (see above photo) and the disrespect shown to her colleagues. A recent incident occurred where she attempted to strong arm Councilwoman Emma Sharif at her annual Senior Luncheon.
Compton residents continue to voice their displeasure with the failure of the city to repair potholes along major thoroughfares. 2UrbanGirls traveled South on Wilmington two days ago and had to swerve from El Segundo to Compton Blvd to avoid the many potholes that remain despite the influx of Measure P funds that were to be used to fix them. Residents are concerned that the “love” Zurita claims to have for the city is overpowered by her dislike for Mayor Aja Brown.
2UrbanGirls received a peculiar letter written by City Manager Cecil Rhambo, which was in our possession before its intended recipient, Asm. Gipson. 2UrbanGirls was to use the letter to admonish the behavior displayed by Chambers, however, it clearly shows that “someone” coerced Rhambo into writing the letter to stir up issues with Chambers employer. If Chambers had done something wrong, shouldn’t the letter be addressed to her and not her boss?
These are the types of shenanigans that continues to stifle progress in the city of Compton. Instead of working to fix BLATANT issues like potholes, some council members are using the City Managers office as their personal attack dog. Zurita is part of the voting block who keeps Rhambo in the City Manager’s seat and free from annual evaluations of his performance.
Zurita continues to pander to senior citizens, who most likely only vote for her because they liked her mother, not because she is representing the city with dignity and respect. This is NOT the type of representation Compton taxpayers should be paying for. It’s embarrassing and reeks of collusion.
