HAWTHORNE, California—During a special meeting of the Hawthorne City Council on May 14, 2020, Councilmember Haidar Awad’s Eviction Moratorium ordinance passed unanimously, providing relief to Hawthorne residential and commercial renters.
“I am proud to say that Hawthorne now has its own Eviction Moratorium in place that will help residents negatively affected by job loss or illness during the Coronavirus Pandemic,” said Councilmember Awad, “this ordinance will prevent hundreds of families from becoming homeless through no fault of their own.”
With over 50% of Hawthorne residents renting, Councilmember Awad considered a city eviction moratorium critical assistance for residents and the addition of commercial renters to be vital to the economic future of Hawthorne.
The ordinance includes a provision that extends the eviction moratorium 30 days past the lifting of the stay-at-home order, thus providing an additional cushion.
Over 230 messages of support for Councilmember Awad’s eviction moratorium ordinance were sent to the city clerk and council members.
“We did this together,” said Awad, “you made your voices heard, and the council had to listen.”

Is there going to be any relief or assistance for landlords? What about if we lost our jobs and now we don’t have rental income coming in?
