VENICE – A 49-year-old woman who was found dead near the Harbor (110) Freeway and the Santa Monica (10) Freeway exchange in downtown Los Angeles was identified Tuesday by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner. California Highway Patrol officers responded at 3:30 a.m. Saturday to 725 Venice Boulevard, east of Figueroa Street and north of the Los Angeles Convention Center, where they found Mina Ugrin, according to CHP Officer Elizabeth Kravig and the County Medical Examiner. Her cause of death is listed as “multiple blunt traumatic injuries”. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics pronounced Ugrin dead at the scene.
LANCASTER – A 19-year-old female passenger who was killed in a two-vehicle crash in Lancaster was identified Tuesday. The crash occurred at 8 p.m. Saturday in the area of Avenue J and 27th Street East, according to Detective Jorge Diaz of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Lancaster station. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office identified the victim as Derek Clay. The crash occurred around 5:15 p.m. Sunday in the express lane of the Harbor (110) Freeway near West Slauson Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol. A former Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who lives in Corona pleaded guilty on Friday, Jan. 17, to assaulting a transgender man in the parking lot of a Whittier convenience store who allegedly flipped off the lawman. Joseph Benza III, 36, was charged last month with one felony count of deprivation of rights under color of law for the February 2023 confrontation. Benza entered his plea in L.A. federal court to the offense, which carries a penalty of up to 10 years behind bars, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
