By: Kerry Nenn According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, roughly 10-20% of college students have an alcohol use disorder. Nearly 55% of full-time college students between the ages of 18 and 22 drank alcohol in the past month. More than 33% of college students of the same age reported binge drinking in the past month. These numbers are more than statistics. Each number represents a college student – a young adult at risk due to alcohol abuse and binge drinking. Binge drinking is defined as consuming an excessive amount of alcohol in a short time period.…

As an Inglewood resident, a mother of three children, and a social work graduate student at the University of Southern California, it is disheartening to know that my city has a low-quality educational system. My children would have gone to Inglewood High School but knowing how the School District disregards the importance of children’s academics, I opted out of sending my kids there. Inglewood children will benefit from schools that provide funding to enrich their education. Therefore, it is essential that “City Leaders” listen to the Resident’s voices and assist the School District in making a change and create incentives…

Dear 2UrbanGirls, A deep pocketed, ultra wealthy, Brentwood developer, Thomas Safran, is the latest self-proclaimed appropriator of Black historic and cultural points of interest in Los Angeles. First, the infamous Dunbar Hotel and now the Federally Registered Historic Landmark known as the Watts Train Station and the sacred Cultural Crescent Parkland. Lillian “Momma” Mobley (RIP) and many other Black women championed the fight to get the City to live up to its promise to develop the Cultural Crescent Parkland as a passive park connecting the Train Station to the world famous Watts Towers. And if that wasn’t enough, Graham Street, the…
Hi, I am writing to you as an alumnus of Inglewood High School. Have you looked into the Inglewood Educational Foundation (IEF)? They solicit donations but don’t provide any acknowledgment. The administrator Dr. Carliss McGhee refuses to disclose the $ in the fund, who contributed, how the funds are spent (and what criteria are used for awarding funds). Dr. McGhee is IUSD Board President and is, apparently, the sole individual who seems to operate the Foundation. Try to find the IEF on a school board agenda or in the budget. Is this a slush fund for favorite teachers or schools? The…
Dear 2UrbanGirls, Here is a letter to Janice Hahn and the Board of Supervisors sent by Gloria Gray yesterday. Note the third paragraph where Gray says she has “no tolerance for sexual harassment or discrimination in any form…” Related: South Bay water board takes no action in light of new general manager’s sexual harassment settlement If so, why did she hire West Basin general manager Patrick Sheilds with his known background in the first place, and why did she vote to extend his contract for 3 more years this January? Dear 2UrbanGirls, Hello, I am writing to you in regard to the proposed development at Prairie and Imperial Highway. This is a large site covering multiple acres that the city of Inglewood is discreetly selling to an unknown developer who will be building hundreds of luxury condos on the site. The project lacks sufficient affordable housing and violated the California Land Surplus Act. The property is being sold with no public offering or notice besides the link attached below. See documents here. It has hastily been issued a negative declaration despite the project clearly posing far more harmful impacts on…
Dear 2UrbanGirls, Employees are concerned that the current administration of the Inglewood Unified School District are ignoring employee’s complaints of racial discrimination on some school campuses. African-American employees have lodged multiple complaints against Alberto de Leon, principal of Centinela Elementary School. He has used the “n” word, described African-Americans as “monkey” and admonishes staff for not knowing Spanish. Employees began lodging their complaints early this year and after he all but admitted to the allegations, the district placed him on paid administrative leave at the end of the school year but he is back. Obviously, he is Latino, like county…
Dear 2UrbanGirls, City employee here! THANK YOU SO MUCH for exposing Yvonne Horton and Aisha Thompson for using their positions to deceive Inglewood voters. Your articles were a hot topic of discussion around city hall today and Wanda’s report shows how slimy Mayor Butts is to try and get a raise out of residents. If he wants to be paid more he should be in the private sector. With all his “accomplishments” wouldn’t someone be happy to take him? Oops, he likes sleeping with the staff. He would cost them too much in sexual harassment lawsuits. You see what happened…
Dear 2UrbanGirls, Felecia Jackson used to live at 4949 W. Century Blvd before being evicted by the city of Inglewood. YOU helped us uncover that the city are the TRUE OWNERS of this property. After Felecia was evicted she was forced to live in an extended stay motel. Her son and his family moved with her. Due to the stress of being evicted, for no fault of her own, other than the city wanting their property back, she endured more stress going through the court process having to sue Warren Properties (management company) and the city for ongoing bed bug…
Dear 2UrbanGirls, The City of Long Beach’s Police Chief Jim McDonnell had a successful primary in the race for LA County Sheriff. He received support from many different organizations and groups. I was surprised that he received a lot of support from the African American community without his qualifications being questioned. Earlier this year, a statistic regarding the City of Long Beach came out that African Americans and Latinos get stopped more than other races, despite African Americans being approximately only 13% of the population. What is even more disturbing is the unhappiness of African American officers on McDonnell’s department.…
