Dear 2UrbanGirls, HUGE props to activist Najee Ali for standing with the family of Kassidy Jones, the teen who was beaten by a grown woman in a McDonald’s in the Los Angeles area. I was shocked that as I was watching the press conference Ali held and the accompanying news story on Fox 11, no black leaders were standing alongside him condemning the attack. Ali continues to call for the police to investigate because the now viral video shows Kassidy’s attacker’s FULL FACE! No one knows who she is? No one bothered to video the woman leaving to see what…

Dear 2UrbanGirls, I am sure you didn’t know this but were you aware that Inglewood Unified School District quietly sold a portion of Morningside High School to the Los Angeles Clippers? That’s why only the west side of the school was remodeled. The east side is gated off, the old classrooms boarded up and abandoned. When will Ballmer do something with the property? What is he going to put there? Does the community know about this? The Morningside High Alumni Association has received thousands of dollars from Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts Jr.’s campaign accounts so its probably why the…
Dear 2UrbanGirls, Did you hear the GOOD news? At last night’s school board meeting, they approved a new principal to replace Debbie Tate. The district announced she will be the Director of High School Redesign which could mean consolidation is on the horizon. The new guy is from Texas. All I know is he is “Mr. Collins” and is from Texas. If you go to the district’s website you can’t access any of the accompanying documents from the board agenda but all we know is he’s supposed to start October 1. Tate’s reign of terror and evil is about to…
By Liam Dillon, Terry Castleman, Paloma Esquivel | Los Angeles Times At Promenade Towers, a Bunker Hill apartment complex with 611 units that bills itself as “an urban oasis in the heart of downtown,” tenants received 371 eviction notices from late January through July. At 1600 Vine, a Hollywood building with 375 units that’s been known for attracting social media influencers who have posted from its balconies and manicured courtyard, 313 notices were issued in that period. By: RentCafe In the national backdrop of a conversion slowdown, Los Angeles bucks the trend and hits the gas on conversion projects with a 10-year-high of transformed apartments, an all time-high in office conversions, as well as an all time-high in hotel conversions. The prospects also look bright as LA outranks any other U.S. city in future adaptive reuse projects. Here are some interesting findings from RentCafe’s annual Adaptive Reuse Report: In 2022, Los Angeles became the leading city for apartment conversions, commanding a whopping 13% of all adaptive reuse projects across the country. 1,292 fresh apartments are breathing new…
By: Jason Henry | OC Register El Monte City Manager Alma Martinez delayed her employees’ efforts to shut down an unpermitted lot where hundreds of tractor-trailers were parked for months until city councilmembers, frustrated over the inaction, publicly raised concerns last year, an investigation by the Southern California News Group has revealed. The city’s handling of the matter reportedly drew the attention of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, which interviewed several employees about it and other topics earlier this year, according to sources who requested anonymity out of fear of retaliation. A spokesperson for the District Attorney’s Office…
Dear 2UrbanGirls, Have you noticed that the LAX Airport is expanding at a record pace and despite the presence of the LAX Police Chief in Inglewood, the appointed commissioners to Inglewood’s Aviation Commission are not present during meetings on airport matters. Related: LAX expansion project will add eight gates to Tom Bradley Terminal If you go to the City’s website the section for agendas and minutes for the Aviation Commission hasn’t been updated since….ummm…Sept. 20, 2017. Yes, an entire SIX YEARS! If this body of folks aren’t meeting then why did the newly elected councilwoman appoint one of her opponents…
In the wake of a catastrophic wildfire that has left destruction and heartache, the tight-knit community of Lahaina finds itself grappling with urgent needs for essential services and support. The scenes of devastation I am witnessing saddened me beyond words. The wildfire’s rampage through Lahaina has wrought widespread wreckage, leaving our community in a state of profound distress. The immediate requirements of Lahaina are clear and pressing: the restoration of electricity and the reinstatement of internet and cell services. These basic utilities are vital lifelines currently severed, exacerbating the challenges our community members face. While governmental assurances of aid have…
Dear 2UrbanGirls, Thank you for the ongoing updates on what’s going on in the City. Here is something to put on your radar as you are sharing about the possible disposition of school land in the Morningside Park area. There appears to be a concerted effort, within City Hall, to assist with the demise of the school district due to their failure to build housing on land previously owned by the redevelopment agency. You posed a question “why are only the mayor’s campaign donors being selected to purchase that land”. Well, the goal appears to be to not build housing…
Dear 2UrbanGirls, I wasn’t sure if you covered the city of Paramount but we have concerns about David Verdugo being named the interim superintendent of Paramount Unified School District. Verdugo is a partner with Leadership Associates who was hired as a consultant, by the district, to conduct a national search for a superintendent. Verdugo is currently the interim superintendent of the district. How is he allowed to be both a consultant and an employee simultaneously? If the District Attorney’s office is going after Los Angeles Councilman Curren Price for violating Government Code 1090, what is he going to do about…
Dear 2UrbanGirls, Inglewood Unified School District is refusing to release teachers that sent in their resignations from their contracts. They claim because resignations were submitted after the end of the fiscal year, 6/30/23, teachers will be bonded to their contracts until replacement teachers are found. This is per Dr. Morris. His inability to recruit teachers shouldn’t fall on the shoulders of teachers who want OUT! Inglewood Teachers Association is useless. Fed up with IUSD
Dear 2UrbanGirls, The Inglewood Music Festival had a great turnout and was SAFE! I don’t know how many people actually registered online for the event, but if you did, you noticed the City was raising funds for Inglewood Unified School District in lieu of having people pay to attend. The City had a ceremony last month where they presented the check for a little over $10,000 to Inglewood Unified Administrator Dr. James Morris for all of the donations that [allegedly] came in. If people were donating, why is the payment on this week’s warrant register saying its coming from the…
As you may know one of the high-risk offenders under LA County Probation shot and killed the two Whittier police officers. This could have been avoided had we been able to monitor him instead of watching kids in the juvenile hall. Related: El Monte cop killer had not been seen by L.A. probation officials for months before attack Most of the staff assigned to supervise them have been reassigned to the juvenile halls under the new Chief Rosa. Now he’s proposing shutting down field offices to have officers report to juvenile hall twice a month. To make matters worse, the…
Dear 2UrbanGirls, I see you have updated us on the fundraising efforts around Los Angeles County with both local and state seats but have you noticed how quiet County Supervisor Janice Hahn’s campaign is? Typically, you’re inbox would be inundated with emails about her endorsements and fundraising, as we see with Jennifer Williams (Senate District 35) and Sade Elhawary (Assembly District 57). Janice has nothing to brag about. That’s why. Sure, Jennifer and Sade are political newcomers, but they are gaining steam, by out-fundraising their opponents, with the hopes of gaining name recognition at the ballot box, meanwhile, seasoned politicians…
By Josh Stephens and Tatum Troutt | California Planning & Development Report When Los Angeles Metro proposed and started planning a light rail line through the Crenshaw District and Leimert Park – historically the heart of the city’s Black community – some of the opposition was fierce. More than just a new way to move people around the notoriously congested metropolis, the Crenshaw Line promised to become a test of the theory of “transit gentrification.” Activists criticized the line in part on the grounds that it would hasten gentrification, attracting new development, residents, and capital that might crowd out or displace…
