In response to California’s and Los Angeles’ growing nursing shortage, a coalition of education and healthcare leaders has launched the Los Angeles County Nursing 2035 initiative. This comprehensive effort aims to increase the number of nurses in the region to avoid a “care crisis” as the population ages and nurses retire. According to the Community College League of California, California currently ranks 40th in the nation in registered nurses per capita, with an urgent need in Los Angeles County. And as detailed by Lightcast research, 6,454 job openings for Registered Nurses in Los Angeles County are projected to be available…

By Dr. Jose Fierro A college degree or certificate is a proven pathway to higher earnings, job stability, and economic mobility. Yet, nearly half of California’s adults have not pursued higher education due to barriers like cost, rigid schedules, and a lack of local options. California set an ambitious goal: by 2030, 70 percent of working-age adults should hold a college degree or certificate. However, instead of making it easier to achieve this, public universities are blocking one of the most promising solutions – community college bachelor’s degree programs. Cerritos College is leading the way with its first-of-its-kind Field Ironworker…
By: Horlenes Flores and Isabella Lee Growing up in Highland Park, Sundays began with mass at St. Ignatious de Loyola Catholic Church, followed by a traditional Guatemalan plate of food with pan frances from El Chapin on York Blvd. Walking the main streets of York and Figueroa felt like home-every corner held a place of my roots, the smell of pan dulce from Elsa’s Bakery. Gentrification in Highland Park Los Angeles. New businesses move in and push local businesses out in what was once a largely hispanic neighborhood I even spent many afternoons at Bobby’s Auto Parts because my dad, a mechanic,…
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman announced today that Gary Weisenberg and Matthew Weisenberg, owners of S&W Atlas Iron and Metal Corp., have been remanded into county jail without bail until their upcoming bail hearing on March 17. The two face a 25-count indictment, including charges stemming from the devastating August 12, 2024, explosion at their Watts scrap metal facility, located next to Jordan High School. “The young students at Jordan High School should never have been put in harm’s way,” District Attorney Hochman said. “This case is progressing toward justice for the children, educators, and community members…

By: Abigail Machado & Deztenie B Toscano When you hear the name Watts, what comes to mind? Is it the neighborhood’s rich cultural and artistic heritage, its historical and social impact—including its vital role in the civil rights movement—or the resilient, vibrant, and tight-knit community that thrives along Wilmington Avenue, Imperial Highway, and 103rd Street? If one of these attributes is what first comes to mind, chances are you’re part of this community or have been at one point in your life. Deztenie B. Demands for accountability and justice are intensifying as Los Angeles County’s probation system teeters on the brink of collapse under the leadership of Chief Probation Officer (CPO) Guillermo Viera Rosa. On November 14, 2024, Probation Oversight Commissioner, Esche Jackson, frustrated, made a statement regarding CPO Viera Rosa once again, not showing up to the Probation Oversight Commission. Commissioner Jackson made it clear that she wanted her remarks on record, which included a direct call for the CPO’s rejection of leadership, series of failures, and his inability to be present with his absence being disrespectful to Probation and all stakeholders. She…
”I Just Voted Against the Partisan House Republican Funding Bill With Cuts to Food, Housing, and Veterans’ Assistance” Dear Friend, I just left the House Floor after voting against House Republicans’ partisan government funding bill. Over the past few weeks, I’ve spoken with many of you and heard you clearly: You do not want Elon Musk and Donald Trump gutting the critical services you and your loved ones depend on. That’s why I voted against this sham of a funding bill, which included no safeguards to prevent Don and Elon’s hostile government takeover. Why would I sign a blank check…
Hi 2UrbanGirls, I am a long time residents of Ladera Heights and I was sent this email “This is a HUGE win for residents in the city portion of Ladera that have school age kids!” about Los Angeles Unified School District’s efforts to coordinate students transfers out of Inglewood Unified School District. Thank you so much to our neighbor Kim Richter for following up on this issue with LAUSD! Allison Holdorff is the Assistant to the Board of Education member who represents Westchester and Venice. They have agreed to coordinate the transfer of children residing in Los Angeles City Ladera…
2UrbanGirls, It is commendable that millions of dollars are being raised for victims of the recent wildfires but no one is asking where it is actually going? The money raised is being given to nonprofit organizations instead of cutting checks directly to the people who lost everything. FireAid raised $100 million and without saying where $50 million of it went, we only know that $50 million was disbursed to about 100 or so organizations to do stuff that makes no sense. Mostly the same groups who always get money and mostly not directly affiliated with Altadena or the Pacific Palisades…
Dear 2UrbanGirls, As you are well aware Asm. Mike Gipson is termed out and some well heeled folks are lining up to succeed him. Here’s what we know so far based on state filings. Former Long Beach Councilman Al Austin filed to run for the seat but shows he terminated the campaign account last month so perhaps a deal was made for him to exit the race. Here he is with his wife Daysha Austin who is reportedly working in the office of Sen. Laura Richardson. Its supposedly very “hush hush”. Compton Unified School District Board Trustee Ayanna Davis also…

John Leomen Ross, 40, was sentenced by United States District Judge Dale S. Fischer. Ross pleaded guilty in November 2024 to one count of assault on a federal employee resulting in bodily injury. “The defendant here violently attacked a postal employee who was hard at work doing his job,” said Acting United States Attorney Joseph McNally. “We are grateful to our law enforcement partners for their work helping obtain a prison sentence for this defendant.” “The…
This was an unfortunate and cautionary tale for all Residents. The outcome was unconscionable Based on this information, it doesn’t appear as though her insurance company acted in her best interest. Perhaps the Homeowner should file an inquiry with the Department of Insurance re: her insurance company and the City of Inglewood. Shouldn’t there have been a request to be removed from the suit re: the unfortunately injured woman as well as an additional Homeowner suit against the City of Inglewood? At least she’ll have an answer re: accountability re: the judgment against her and increased costs going forward. FYI The…
By: Maria Delgado Lynwood Unified School District, once a cornerstone of the community, has become a symbol of systemic dysfunction, with teachers and parents alike growing increasingly frustrated with a culture of mismanagement, retaliation, and neglect. The district’s ongoing issues – including the constant threat of layoffs, crumbling infrastructure, and lack of support for educators – have created a toxic environment for both teachers and students. As this cycle of failure continues, the question remains: How long can the community tolerate the status quo? Retaliation Through Layoffs: Teachers Fight for Fair Compensation A disturbing trend has emerged in the Lynwood…
