COMPTON – The Compton Sheriff’s Department has released a report detailing a significant drop in street takeovers in the areas they patrol.
The report was shared during the Dec. 2 Los Angeles County Board of Supervisor’s meeting.
County Supervisor Holly J. Mitchell, which district includes Compton, Gardena and unincorporated areas within both cities, was pleased at the progress being reported.
“Today, we received the latest quarterly update from LA County’s Street Takeover Reduction Workgroup, showing a 35% drop in our district. Areas served by the Compton Sheriff’s Station, such as East Gardena, West Rancho Dominguez, and East Rancho Dominguez, saw even greater decreases,” said Mitchell. “This progress reflects the strong collaboration between County departments, law enforcement, community partners, and residents that we were intentional about creating since our first symposium on addressing illegal street takeovers and racing two years ago.”
Mitchell also thanked social media platform Snapchat for assisting with the Sheriff’s Department’s efforts.
“A special thank you to Snapchat for being at the table and helping to find ways to bring other social media platforms into this effort. Our work is far from done. We continue to have the highest rates of illegal street racing and takeovers. We must build on what we know is working and uphold our shared responsibility to keep our streets safe.”
