COMPTON – The Compton Unified School District proudly announces that Board of Trustees Clerk Satra Zurita has been appointed to the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office Black and African American Advisory Panel — a statewide body dedicated to advancing equity and success for Black and African American students in higher education.
“I am deeply honored to accept this appointment and recognize the great responsibility that comes with it,” said Trustee Satra Zurita. “I am committed to advancing the mission of increasing enrollment, retention, and success for Black and African American students across our community colleges. It is a privilege to contribute to this important work alongside Chairperson Cassandra Jennings, the Chancellor’s Office, and fellow panel members. I look forward to engaging meaningfully in discussions, outreach, and partnerships that support and uplift our communities.”
Established in 2017, the Advisory Panel works closely with the Chancellor’s Office and the Board of Governors to improve enrollment, graduation, completion, and transfer rates for Black and African American students. Under the leadership of Chairperson Cassandra Jennings, the Panel develops recommendations in the areas of communications, outreach, and partnerships that help advance educational opportunities and outcomes across the California Community Colleges system.
As a member of the Advisory Panel, Trustee Zurita will help guide policy recommendations, strengthen community outreach, and build statewide partnerships that increase African American student enrollment, retention, and completion—while promoting community colleges as affordable pathways to degrees, careers, and university transfer opportunities.
The next Advisory Panel meeting will be held in early December, marking the start of another year of statewide collaboration and impact.
A lifelong advocate for equity and access in education, Trustee Zurita, who currently serves as Clerk of the Board of Trustees and is the longest-serving Trustee in Compton Unified history, has proudly served on the Board of Trustees for 20 years, championing initiatives that expand opportunity for all students. Her appointment reflects both her deep commitment to the community and her ongoing leadership in promoting educational excellence across California.
She represents students and families in Trustee Area G and is a native of Compton who was educated in Compton schools. A proud alumna of Compton High School, Zurita has completed undergraduate studies at the University of California, Irvine; Loyola Marymount University; California State University, Long Beach; and California State University, Dominguez Hills. She also holds certificates in Meeting Planning and Special Event Coordination from California State University, Long Beach.
