LOS ANGELES – A judge ruled Thursday that a man charged with an unprovoked shooting rampage last year at an apartment complex in Marina del Rey was insane at the time of the crimes.
Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge William L. Sadler — who received reports from two doctors — found that Victoryloc Nguyen was not guilty by reason of insanity of one count each of attempted murder, shooting at an occupied building, first-degree residential burglary and unlawful possession of an assault weapon, along with four counts of assault with an assault weapon and 10 counts of assault with an assault weapon on a peace officer, according to Deputy District Attorney Stephen Lonseth.
Two other counts — attempted murder of a peace officer — were dismissed due to insufficiency of the evidence, according to the prosecutor.
The judge ordered Nguyen, now 43, to be sent to a state mental hospital, with a maximum confinement of life, Lonseth said.
Authorities said last year that Nguyen went on an April 13, 2024, nighttime shooting rampage at the apartment complex where he lived.
No one was injured, authorities said.
Nguyen was accused of firing more than 90 rounds at Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies and residents from numerous locations throughout the complex over a three-hour period, according to a statement released last year by the District Attorney’s Office shortly after the case was filed.
“This individual jeopardized many lives and terrorized an apartment community,” LASD Central Patrol Division Chief Bobby Wyche said in the statement last year. “Our deputy personnel, along with other local law enforcement agencies, were able to quickly respond, locate and arrest the suspect without firing a single shot. We are extremely grateful that nobody was injured during this incident and that he will be held accountable for his reckless actions.”
Nguyen has remained behind bars since his arrest at about 12:30 a.m. the next day, jail records show.
