BURBANK – A man was struck and killed by a Los Angeles-bound Metrolink train at the downtown Burbank station, authorities said Saturday.
The crash occurred at about 10 p.m. Friday on the tracks west of the pedestrian crossing at the downtown Burbank Metrolink Station, 201 N. Front St., between Magnolia Boulevard and Olive Avenue, Metrolink spokeswoman Laurene Lopez told City News Service.
“After speaking with witnesses and reviewing surveillance video, it was determined that the decedent intentionally positioned himself on the train tracks as the train was approaching,” according to a police statement. “The train, which was travelling northbound, was unable to stop and struck the decedent.”
The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene, Lopez said.
The train was Route 232 from Lancaster to Los Angeles, she said.
“Investigators spoke with the conductor of the Metrolink train, who had remained at the scene after the collision,” according to the police statement. “Neither drugs nor alcohol was believed to be a contributing factor regarding the conductor.”
The tracks were closed between the Glendale and Burbank North stations, Lopez said.
Two of the night’s last trains were cancelled and one stopped at the Burbank Airport, she said.
There were no reports of injuries on the train, Lopez said.
Anyone with any information regarding the crash was urged to call the Burbank Police Department at 818-238-3210.
