LOS ANGELES – A 36-year-old man shot and killed by an alleged carjacker in the Florence-Firestone neighborhood near South Los Angeles was identified Monday by the county Medical Examiner’s office.
Alejandro Gonzalez Magana, whose city of residence was not disclosed, was killed in a shooting that left another man wounded around 11:40 p.m. Thursday in the 9000 block of Compton Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputies responding to reports of gunfire found Gonzalez Magana lying on the sidewalk, and he was pronounced dead at the scene, sheriff’s officials said.
While sheriff’s deputies and county fire personnel were responding, Los Angeles police officers were dispatched to another report of a gunshot victim nearby in the 9200 block of Compton Avenue, according to the sheriff’s department.
“Upon their arrival, they located an additional gunshot victim,” according to a department statement. “The victim was transported by fire personnel to a local hospital… .”
That victim was listed in critical but stable condition.
The investigation revealed that two suspects approached the first two victims as they were seated in a vehicle and a fight broke out when the suspects attempted to rob them or carjack their vehicle, sheriff’s officials said.
One suspect drew a handgun and shot both victims, according to the sheriff’s department.
“When the occupants of a second vehicle stopped to investigate and or render aid to the victims, the suspects carjacked them,” authorities said.
The suspects fled from the scene and were last seen heading north on Compton Avenue, sheriff’s officials said.
The carjacked vehicle was described as a light-colored Acura.
No suspect description was released.
