Residents with students in two northern school districts are preparing to regain local control of their schools after they are projected to pay off the balance of state loans in the coming month.
EdSource, California’s largest journalism organization focused on education, reported that Oakland Unified School District and Vallejo City Unified School District will return to local control after two decades in receivership.
But both districts still face major financial challenges. Vallejo City Unified, dealing with a budget shortfall of $36 million, is on the verge of closing two schools. Oakland is similarly struggling, with considerations of another insolvency not yet off the table.
Oakland Unified went into receivership in 2003. Local residents are ecstatic that State education leaders Tony Thurmond and Linda Darling-Hammond agree with Alameda County that Oakland Unified is ready to manage its own finances again.
