LOS ANGELES – A stabbing suspect was fatally shot by police near USC Saturday, authorities said.
Officers responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 900 block of West 23rd Street, in the University Park area south of the Santa Monica (10) Freeway, at about 11 a.m. Saturday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
They discovered a stabbing victim and the suspect at the scene. The stabbing victim was taken to a hospital in stable condition, police said.
“The officers attempted to take the suspect into custody when an Officer Involved Shooting occurred,” according to the LAPD. “Prior to the OIS, officers used less lethal options to de-escalate the incident (beanbag shotgun).”
The suspect was struck by gunfire and taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead. Police said his knife would be recovered and booked as evidence.
Bodycam footage and other surveillance videos were also being investigated as evidence.
No officers were injured.
The area around 23rd Street and neighboring blocks were expected to be impacted for several hours.
