SANTA ANA – A 33-year-old man pleaded guilty and was immediately sentenced Thursday to 19 years in prison for stabbing his grandmother in Santa Ana, the second time he was convicted of attacking the victim.
Edward Alexander Dominguez pleaded guilty to attempted murder with sentencing enhancements for attempted premeditated murder, causing great bodily injury on an elder and the personal use of a deadly weapon.
Dominguez accepted a plea deal from Orange County Superior Court Judge Larry Yellin, who gave the defendant credit for 1,779 days behind bars.
Dominguez used two knives in the attack on the victim, who was stabbed about 4:25 p.m. Oct. 8, 2020 in the 700 block of North Minter Street, according to police.
Dominguez fought with someone who intervened to protect the victim and then left the residence, but was arrested nearby a short time later, police said.
Dominguez pleaded guilty in 2019 to attacking his grandmother June 14, 2018, according to court records. He was sentenced to four years in prison for that and was given credit for 866 days behind bars in 2019.
On June 14, 2018, he was home with the victim in her Santa Ana apartment when he suddenly “grabbed (the victim) by her hair and said, `I want $20 or I’ll kill you,”‘ prosecutors said in court papers.
Dominguez also “threw her against a metal table and punched her in the face,” prosecutors said.
Dominguez also “tried to strangle” the victim as she struggled with him and then “threw her to the floor,” prosecutors said.
The victim’s shouts for help brought help from neighbors, prosecutors said. The victim was 79 years old at the time.
Dominguez told police he wanted the money to buy drugs and had been regularly using methamphetamine, prosecutors said.
