South Los Angeles-based Climate Advocate and Educator Fatima Iqbal-Zubair declared her candidacy to represent the 65th District in the California State Assembly. The chair of the California Democratic Party’s Progressive Caucus, Iqbal-Zubair is running to create real solutions to advance racial, economic, and environmental justice.
“We can’t wait any longer to address the needs of working families. We have an urgent need to improve worker protections, build affordable housing, ensure our public education system is fully resourced and funded, pass universal health care, and ensure every resident can access clean air and water,” stated Iqbal-Zubair.
“I’m running to represent Assembly District 65 because our communities deserve a leader who will fight for us with conviction, courage, and integrity. Now–more than ever–it’s time to move forward with a bold vision that uplifts our teachers, students, unions, and working families while tackling our cost of living, building affordable housing, and responding to our infrastructure needs. For too long, neglect has prevented us from getting ahead. Together, we can work to ensure a better tomorrow so our communities can thrive.”
The 65th State Assembly District is represented by Assemblymember Mike Gipson, who will begin his final term on December 2nd. It includes the communities of Carson, Compton, North Long Beach, San Pedro, Harbor City, Harbor Gateway, Watts, Wilmington, and Willowbrook.
The Primary Election will take place on June 2, 2026.
