SANTA ANA – A pedestrian who was crossing a Santa Ana street against traffic was killed when he was struck by a vehicle whose driver first left the scene then returned minutes later.
The fatal crash was reported to Santa Ana police at 8:19 p.m. Friday around Fairview and Harvard streets, according to the Santa Ana Police Department.
Arriving officers and Orange County Fire Authority paramedics found the 32-year-old man on the ground and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation indicated the man was struck while illegally walking across Fairview in a crosswalk while traffic was flowing, police said.
The woman driving the vehicle that struck the pedestrian left the scene, according to witnesses. But she returned minutes later and cooperated with the investigation, police said.
Neither alcohol nor drugs appear to be a factor, police said, but the investigation continued. “This incident is being investigated as a possible hit-and-run,” police said.
A description of the victim was not immediately provided.
Anyone with information was asked to call Det. K. Briley at 714-245- 8215 or the SAPD Traffic Division at 714-245-8200.
