INGLEWOOD – The Inglewood City Clerk has released the certified candidates list for the upcoming November elections which includes a member of her staff.
Angela Allen currently serves as the deputy city clerk after her good friend Aisha Thompson was elected in 2020.
Allen is currently a full-time employee in the City Clerk’s office, who according to the Inglewood Municipal Code must resign before running. This situation also arose when Thompson ran, but then City Attorney Ken Campos was “Ray Charles” to the IMC and ignored calls to enforce the provision.
The new interim city attorney, Rick Olivarez, is well-healed and politically connected and considering his office is handling the lawsuit between the mayor and his former assistant, it is unknown if he will be persuaded to look the other way as well.
It is not known what experience Allen has to qualify as treasurer, however, she would be taking a severe paycut should she become elected.
In 2020 the council, led by Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts Jr., reduced the treasurer’s salary by thousands of dollars to a paltry $1414 after she started to publicly complain about his leadership and the city’s finances. The position received an additional $7000 for performing “other duties”.
It is unclear if the council will restore those “other duties” should Allen become elected.
In addition to Allen, others running for treasurer are Taylor Bryant and possibly Andrea Collins (pending signature verification).
Councilman Eloy Morales Jr. and Thompson will not face any challengers.
Councilwoman Dionne Faulk will face multiple challengers – Leslie Jones (proprietor of 1010 Wines and Events), Angelique Johnson (golf aficionado), and Carlos Zurita.
For the Inglewood Unified School District Advisory Board Margaret Evans will face attorney Ronald Gomez. Ernesto Castillo will automatically return to his seat as he is not facing any challengers.
