LONG BEACH – A homeless man who allegedly pointed a weapon and threatened to shoot various people at a Metro A (Blue) Line station in Long Beach — then led police on a foot chase during which at least one officer shot him — was being held without bail Thursday.
Tyrell Harris, 35, was being held without bail. Long Beach police said he suffered a gunshot wound to the upper body and was treated at a hospital before being medically cleared and booked into jail.
According to the Long Beach Police Department, officers responded to the station at Pacific Avenue and Fifth Street around 9:10 p.m. Wednesday regarding a man brandishing a firearm on the Metro platform. When they arrived, the officers found the suspect, who immediately exited the platform and ran away, according to Sgt. Bradford Stein.
Police said the suspect fled when officers arrived at the scene, prompting a foot chase, during which Harris was shot by an officer. It was unclear what prompted the gunfire, but police said no officers were injured.
Officers recovered a replica firearm at the scene, which turned out to be an operable BB pistol, along with a carbon-dioxide cartridge and BBs, police said.
Harris was booked on suspicion of criminal threats, assault with a deadly weapon, obstruction, exhibiting a replica firearm and resisting arrest. He also had an unrelated felony warrant, police said.
