LA MESA – On July 2, 2024, at about 6:48 AM, the La Mesa Police Department received multiple 9-1-1 calls of a subject armed with a knife in the 5800 block of Kelton Avenue, La Mesa.
The callers reported the male was waiving the knife and walking in the street. When officers arrived, the male was still armed with the knife and appeared to be associated with a white Toyota Yaris parked on the curb.
He then retrieved a handgun from a bag and placed the handgun on the curb next to him. Officers requested additional resources and attempted to de-escalate the subject, but he continued to pace in the street or sit on the curb next to the handgun.
After approximately 20 minutes, the subject reached toward the handgun and an officer deployed several beanbag rounds. Officers quickly moved in and the subject was taken into custody.
He was identified as 36-year-old Bryce Segaux, a resident of Inglewood.
When officers looked inside Segaux’s vehicle, they observed a suspicious device consisting of several 5-gallon red tanks. The San Diego Sheriff’s Bomb Squad responded and several residents in the area were temporarily evacuated. Bomb Squad personnel determined the device was not explosive and all residents were able to return to their homes at approximately 10:00 AM.
Segaux was discovered to have an outstanding felony arrest warrant out of Los Angeles and will be booked at County Jail. The handgun recovered at the scene was determined to be a replica. Kelton Avenue was closed to all traffic between El Paso Street and Zeta Street for several hours but has since reopened.
The La Mesa Police Department would like to thank those residents who called us and for their patience as our officers and personnel from the San Diego Sheriff’s Department worked diligently and professionally to safely resolve this situation without any injuries.
