California Gov. Gavin Newsom this week attacked a ballot measure changing parts of Proposition 47, saying it’s more of a “drug policy reform” than an attempt to address retail theft.
His comments at two different press events emphasized the measure’s expensive price tag — and may preview a coming opposition campaign against the district attorney-backed initiative, now numbered Proposition 36.
“I’m very concerned about this drug policy reform that takes possession and makes it a felony,” Newsom said at a Thursday press conference in Oakland. “And increases the size of our prison population by tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, over the next decade at a profound cost to the taxpayers. And I don’t think an improvement of public safety.”
Proposition 36 would increase penalties for some drug and theft crimes by changing portions of Proposition 47. The 2014 voter-approved initiative made some lower-level offenses misdemeanors and set a $950 felony threshold for shoplifting.

Costs too much?
What?
Isn’t this the same guy promoting the bullet train ? The same one who spent, spent and spent like there is a harvest of dollars due from his money orchard?
Transforming a surplus into a massive deficit seems to be his specialty!
Thousands of dollars of merchandise theft means businesses suffer higher insurance and sometimes loose their business.
While many couldn’t care less about the business owners loss or the large corporation loss consider the increase in prices for goods we must pay for the products we need to purchase or the employees who have/will loose their jobs .
Theft is NEVER okay not when it is from a ma & pa shop a corporation, or city, county, or state funds!
Gavin’s policies have not served us well !!
As we all pay more we should each be able to recognize at least a portion of the increase is to cover the cost of theft.
And let’s be real “The “drug” of choice” for many thieves is self indulgence.
Re: Gavin Newsom downplays theft part of Prop. 47 initiative, calling it ‘drug policy reform’
Mr. Public nuisance whose Covid mask policies do not apply to him Continues to double speak and step deep into the shite mire.
He says Prop. 47 reform is too expensive. And yet fails to calculate the Hundreds of millions of dollars loss Through Retail theft and retail stores closing. How many retail store employees are forced to go on unemployment because stores being forced out of business?
I can see why the democratic elites would prefer this Self centered politico to replace the current president. He lives and thrives on cognitive dissonance.
The Apple does not fall far from the tree with auntie Pelosi pulling the strings. Our country is going to hell in handbasket!
