LOS ANGELES – A burglary suspect suffering from an apparent drug overdose who died while in police custody in the Westlake area over the weekend was identified by authorities Thursday, and the investigation into his death was continuing.
Officers were sent to the 200 block of South Rampart Boulevard around 3:40 p.m. Saturday in response to a report of a residential burglary, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
The officers were directed to a parking lot, where a person was restraining the suspect on the ground, police said. Officers handcuffed the suspect, who became unresponsive, appearing to be in medical distress, according to police.
“Based on their observation, the officers believed the subject was experiencing a drug overdose and requested a rescue ambulance,” police said in a statement.
Officers gave the man Narcan and administered CPR until the arrival of Los Angeles Fire Department personnel, who continued life-saving measures until pronouncing him dead at the scene, police said.
On Thursday, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner identified the man as Anthony Sowell, 45, whose city of residence was not known. His cause of death was listed as “deferred” by the medical examiner’s office.
The death was being investigated by the LAPD Force Investigation Division.
