HOLLYWOOD – An attempted murder suspect who escaped from a Rancho Cucamonga jail was captured by Los Angeles Police Department officers in Hollywood Monday, one day after he fled.
Deshaun Stamps, 29, of Riverside was arrested around 12:20 p.m. Monday, KCAL 9 reported.
Stamps had been in custody since Jan. 30, 2023, on suspicion of attempted murder and assaulting a police officer, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department officials.
The sheriff’s department said at approximately 12:19 p.m. Sunday, deputies at the West Valley Detention Center at 9500 Etiwanda Ave. in Rancho Cucamonga discovered Stamps had fled custody during an outside recreation period.
An inmate at the detention center, Roger Montesinos, told KCAL he recalled how he learned Stamps had escaped.
“I was in, two bunks down, when they put us in a code red,” said Montesinos, who was `They told us we had to bunk up for our safety. … They were looking for somebody who escaped, so we just bunked up for the rest of the night.”
“We are currently working with the Los Angeles Police Department to take custody of Stamps,” the sheriff’s department said in a statement. “We extend our thanks to the Los Angeles Police Department and the public for their assistance in locating Deshaun Stamps.”
