POMONA – An armed suspect who was fatally shot by officers from the Pomona Police Department was identified by county authorities Thursday.
The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner’s Office identified the suspect as Rolando Esquivel, 40.
The shooting occurred at 11:57 p.m. Tuesday and Pomona police officers responded to the intersection of North Hamilton Boulevard and West Center Street to a hotel regarding a call about a man with a gun, said sheriff’s homicide Lt. Michael Modica.
Esquivel ran away from the officers, drew a gun and officers opened fire on the suspect, who was struck by gunfire, Modica told reporters.
Esquivel was taken to Pomona Valley Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.
A firearm was recovered at the scene and no officers were injured, the Pomona PD reported.
Homicide investigators from the sheriff’s department are assisting the Pomona police with the shooting investigation.
