We are approaching a year in office for our current Sheriff Robert Luna and not much has changed under his tenure.
Over three dozen people have died in the jails and four of his employees killed themselves. Not to mention one deputy was ambushed while sitting at a red light. Not exactly stellar stats for someone with the experience he is alleged to have.
The media appears to be M.I.A. in not reporting on the dizzying number of lawsuits, filed against former Sheriff Alex Villanueva, that helped Luna get elected. For those not in the loop, nearly all of them have been dismissed in court. Particularly the one filed against him by the County alleging he was defying a subpoena.
The coup de gras was a current Deputy District Attorney suing the County for allegedly depriving the public of crucial information about a video recording of a deputy with their knee in the neck of a man in custody that was leaked to the public.
Although Luna does a great job of being readily available for photo ops, and doing more appearances in full uniform, we don’t see the media challenging him to deliver on his campaign promises.
That’s not what I or the other 1.37 million voters voted for.
We voted for him to crack down on deputy gangs. He hasn’t.
We wanted more transparency. That’s questionable.
And we wanted a Sheriff who supported their deputies.
Ask the families of the deceased Sheriff’s department employees about him, one of which has filed a lawsuit against the County alleging an excessive amount of overtime they are forced to work due to the lack of deputies. That falls on the current Board of Supervisors who froze the budget to keep people from getting hired. And they want another term? I don’t think so.
How’s that for accountability and reform?
