Erwin Chemerinsky’s son Jeff has entered the crowded race for Los Angeles County District Attorney.
The elder Chemerinsky is currently working alongside Mark Ridley-Thomas as a member of his appeals team. Ridley-Thomas has been instrumental in the election of the last two district attorneys, Jackie Lacey and George Gascón.
Jeff Chemerinsky served as a federal prosecutor since 2014 but resigned from the position last week.
In announcing his candidacy, he notes he has never lost a case, and his resume includes convictions of leaders of the MS-13 in Los Angeles and the East Coast Crips. He has also successfully prosecuted robbery and organized retail theft cases.
Before becoming an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Chemerinsky was an attorney with the firm Caldwell Leslie & Proctor, and while at Duke Law School he worked on then-Sen. Joe Biden’s Judiciary Committee staff. In addition to the cases he has prosecuted, Chemerinsky touts management experience overseeing his unit’s roster of attorneys and support staff.
He enters a field that includes Eric Siddall, a leader in the union representing deputy D.A.’s, Jonathan Hatami, John McKinney, Maria Ramirez, Craig Mitchell, and Republican Nathan Hochman.
