Dear 2UrbanGirls,
I wanted to bring to the community’s attention that the city of Compton failed its residents during the “Hurricane Hilary” situation. It’s laughable that Mayor Emma Sharif would be interviewed for a national news organization knowing full well residents were left in the dark during the height of the hoopla surrounding the alleged hurricane.
The city put out this graphic saying sandbags would be available Saturday and Sunday 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.
At first, there was sand but no bags and no shovels. Some were told they had to get bags at a fire station and go back for sand. Then the fire chief eventually showed up with some bags.
Meanwhile, people are running around confused. Seniors were having problems filling bags and the staff stood there and just watched. Men from the community stepped up and helped. Thank God for them.
Sunday morning same place 6 a.m., gate closed and locked. No staff. No sign. People started showing up for bags but they couldn’t get in. I started getting calls and messages from people. I called around and found out there were no more bags. I asked why they didn’t announce that. 15 minutes later they posted it. 🙄
Meanwhile, volunteers started showing up ready to help people with their bags. I called and told my family there were no more. Everyone was mad and they eventually left. Some people stayed for 2 hrs turning people away because there was no sign.
*No communication
*No direction on where to call for different issues (broken tree limbs, etc)
*No emergency shelter/evacuation location just in case
*Mayor was unreachable by phone and social media and I believe Compton taxpayers pay her cellphone bill.
Can you imagine if there were a REAL emergency? Par for the course in Compton – taking credit because there isn’t anyone reporting on it. Thank you for being a community voice.

Inglewood likewise made no preparation to warn drivers that the Streets that routinely flood would be a traffic hazard. Such complete disregard for residents is not unusual however to fail to warn the assorted SOFI customers could put our city at risk of more lost services.
It often feels as if the City council believes the most important task after pleasing billionaires is keeping law firms continually submitting invoices.
Ed Vincent worked diligently to keep the community clean and functional who knew in just so few years the current administration would have so much hatefulness for community they work to eliminate service to residents.
