INGLEWOOD (2UG) – CA Governor Gavin Newsom appeared on the Today Show and shared with host Jacob Soboroff that he is proposing a 28th Amendment to restrict access to guns nationwide.
To be clear, Newsom is not asking to repeal the 2nd Amendment but feels legislators want to turn America into Texas.
“California’s gun death rate is 73% lower than Texas,” said Newsom.
Soboroff asked Newsom, why a Constitutional Amendment, why now?
“Why now is pretty self-evident that a lot of the laws we’ve passed are being rolled back by the federal courts,” said Newsom. “This is an existential crisis we are facing every single day.”
The proposed amendment would include:
- Raise minimum purchase to 21
- Mandate universal background checks
- Waiting period
- Ban assault rifle sales to civilians
According to Soboroff, in order for it to pass, Newsom needs 2/3 of the states would need to propose the same which would trigger a Constitutional Convention where 3/4 of states would have to vote in favor of its passage.
Soboroff asked how Newsom would pull this off with more than half of state legislators controlled by Republicans.
“Their constituency demands it,” said Newsom.
A Fox News poll found 87% of Americans favor such measures.
