Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’ former congressional chief of staff has announced his bid to run for California State Senate District 35.
Darryn Harris served in various roles in Bass’ office while she served in Congress. Harris is a Los Angeles native who attended Loyola Marymount University and UCLA and previously worked for Bradford when he was in the State Assembly.
Harris made the announcement on social media and says he plans to continue building on the “successes” of Bradford.
As Senator, I will work every day to unite South LA and the South Bay around a collective vision that’s inclusive of sustainability for workers, the environment, families, neighborhoods, and communities. I am committed to creating a sustainable future for all.
My agenda will be centered on fighting for higher wages for working people, ensuring housing for all, combating climate change, building an economy that’s built from the bottom up and not the top down, fully funding public schools and advancing criminal justice reform.
While California has made powerful strides in the effort to build a more just society, the fact remains that we have more work to do in the years ahead to address the challenges people are faced with everyday.
In the Senate, I plan to build on the successes of our incumbent Senator Steven Bradford and continue enacting forward-thinking policies that lift up the people of our community across every corner of the 35th District.
Darryn Harris
Harris is the first person, to our knowledge, to have openly declared their intention to run for the seat when Bradford terms out next year. Bradford has not disclosed what his plans are. Perhaps he will make that announcement during the 20th Annual Gardena Jazz Festival on Aug. 23.
Senate District 35 includes the Los Angeles County communities of Carson, Compton, Gardena, Harbor City, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Lawndale, Lennox, San Pedro, Torrance, Watts, Willowbrook, and Wilmington.
