HAWTHORNE, Calif. – A 21-year-old motorist was arrested after fatally striking a bicyclist in a hit-and-run crash in Hawthorne, authorities said Friday.
Police responded to the intersection of Rosecrans and Cerise avenues around 8:45 p.m. after receiving reports of an injury collision, according to the Hawthorne Police Department. Personnel from the Los Angeles County Fire Department also responded and paramedics performed lifesaving measures, but the person died at the scene.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the bicyclist was hit by a black newer-model Nissan SUV westbound on Rosecrans, police said.
An anonymous caller notified police that the vehicle was parked in a secure underground parking structure in the 14100 block of Cerise Avenue. Investigators located the vehicle and confirmed it had been in the crash.
It was unclear where and how the motorist was taken into custody. His name was not immediately released.
