SAN ANTONIO (TMX) – The wife of a man arrested last week in connection with a fatal dog attack in Texas has been arrested on the same charges, authorities said.
On Feb. 24, 81-year-old Ramon Najera and his 74-year-old wife Janie arrived on the 2800 block of Depla Street in San Antonio to visit friends, and were attacked by two American Staffordshire terriers that escaped their yard, the San Antonio Police Department said in a statement following the incident.
According to police, the dogs were still “actively attacking the couple” when EMS arrived at the scene. An EMS captain was bitten in the leg while trying to intervene, and another man was injured. Najera died as a result of his injuries.
One of the dog’s owners, 31-year-old Christian Alexander Moreno, was arrested last week and charged with a dangerous dog attack resulting in death and injury to elderly by omission or negligence.
The City of San Antonio Animal Care Services was called in to investigate. In a statement this week, SAACS said they took three American Staffordshire terriers from the home.
The two dogs that participated in the attack were euthanized Friday, and the third was euthanized Saturday, the agency said. They are continuing to investigate whether the dogs were involved in any other attacks.
After further investigation, Moreno’s wife, 31-year-old Abilene Schnieder, was arrested Wednesday on the same charges.
