The publisher of the Long Beach Post has announced his departure from the 16-year-old website.
David Sommers made the announcement in A farewell letter from the publisher: Thank you, Long Beach. See you soon, Oregon.
According to the Long Beach based website LB4D News in September 2021, Summers made a very public exit from the LB Post to become the Chief Operating Officer of the LB Post’s parent company Pacific 6. One year later in September 2022, he was back as the LB Post publisher.
The Post began in 2007 under the leadership of Shaun Lumachi and now Congressman Robert Garcia. Their first editor-in-chief was Alison Jean Eaton who joined the team after a successful run at the Compton Bulletin.
Once Garcia was elected to the Long Beach City Council he placed his ownership into a blind trust which became a case study on how Garcia rose from student leadership at California State University, Long Beach to the city council.
Cindy Allen, a former Long Beach police officer who acquired part ownership of The Post in 2013 as Garcia announced his run for mayor. He then fully divested from the website making Allen the sole owner.
Allen then sold The Post to John Molina / Pacific6 in 2018 and was elected to the Long Beach City Council in 2019.
The Post is the most-read news source in Long Beach and has helped two of its owners become elected to office.
With the departure of Sommers his replacement has not been announced.
