INGLEWOOD, Calif. (2UrbanGirls) – The Inglewood Planning Commission approved a special use permit (SUP) during a special planning commission meeting held on Jan. 11.

Phenix Salon Suites are preparing to open a new location in the Crenshaw-Imperial shopping center, which is backed by rapper LL Cool J, whose real name is James Todd Smith. Smith co-owns 80 locations across the United States.

The SUP application was submitted by Sandy Sigal, who is an executive with NewMark-Merrill which owns and operates the shopping center.
According to the plan submitted to the City, Phenix will occupy a 14,000 sq. ft. space in the shopping center that was previously a Fallas Paredes. Plans detail the space will house 82 salon suites and two bathrooms. The hours of operation will be from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Phenix Salon Suites, provide Lifestyle Professionals with beautiful salon suites in a spa-like setting. They rents salon suites to stylists, estheticians, nail techs and other beauty professionals, in 2007 and today the brand has more than 330 locations across 33 states.
There is already a nail salon, Contempo, operating 210 feet away. This new business will directly impact them.
During Inglewood Mayor James Butts’ reelection last year, LL Cool J was prominently featured in radio promotions aired on KJLH on behalf of Butts, Councilman George Dotson, and water board candidate Gerard McCallum, who is an executive with Wilson Meany. Wilson Meany is developing the Hollywood Park site.
Butts’ campaign finance reports show no payments were made to any entities attached to the rapper.
Last year, the City was given free access to office space inside the Crenshaw-Imperial shopping center for the use of the Inglewood Police Department.
Work is currently underway at the property to prepare for the opening which has not been made public as of yet.
