Formed in 2008, the African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council (AATCLC) partners with community stakeholders, elected officials, and public health agencies to inform the direction of tobacco control policy, practices, and priorities, as they affect the lives of Black Americans and African immigrant populations. The AATCLC has been at the forefront in elevating the regulation of the sale of mentholated and other flavored tobacco products on the national tobacco control agenda. The AATCLC is seeking a highly organized self-starter to assist in the implementation of an exciting statewide project. “Finishing The Fight” is an innovative project that educates, engages, and empowers African American/African Immigrant communities to fight back against the predatory tobacco industry. The project provides technical assistance on policy initiatives that restrict the sale of mentholated and unregulated flavored tobacco products. 

We have also built a grassroots African American Tobacco Control Platform that includes the broader issues facing our community and addresses the tobacco industry’s predatory history of violations of the Convention for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD). A successful candidate will be able to telecommute but preferably lives in Southern California and has strong knowledge and connections to public health and social justice organizations.

Tobacco control experience is desired but not mandatory. This position will be required to work directly with the Project Director and Project Coordinator to coordinate the day-to-day functioning of “Finishing The Fight” which will include coordinating trainings, webinars and/or symposia; responding to requests for technical assistance; conducting media outreach; working with other community organizations; representing the AATCLC when required; attending community meetings; staffing and coordinating AATCLC meetings and conference calls; and performing other duties as required.

Responsibilities of the Project Assistant include:

  • Manage community partners
  • Media contacts and media outreach
  • Assist with the preparation of reports, presentations, and other correspondence to effectively promote the AATCLC
  • Participate in local coalitions and community partnerships
  • Schedule meetings with policymakers 
  • Attend selected local government meetings
  • Participate in continuing education trainings on and around tobacco. 
  • Handle logistics and coordinate trainings, webinars, and symposia
  • Staff AATCLC meetings (i.e. logistics, note taking, refreshments)Maintain accurate records for progress reports
  • Report to the Project Coordinator
  • Perform other duties as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Highly organized and independent worker who is a team player
  • 3 years of work experience in a position that requires responsibility and autonomy
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, Social Media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Constant Contact
  • Available for occasional work-related travel (expenses covered)
  • Available for occasional evening and weekend work-related activities
  • Applies principles of cultural humility in their work practices and in everyday life

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree desired but not necessary
  • Experience and/or interest in policy and advocacy work related to criminal/global justice
  • Social media management skills
  • Community organizing (a plus)
  • Skilled in editing written material 

Salary: The position is .8 FTE (32 hrs. per week) and the salary is commensurate with experience. This is a fully benefited position, with health, dental, sick, and vacation time accrual.
