LOS ANGELES – “Avatar: The Way of Water” is the highest-grossing film in North America for the fifth consecutive week, taking in another $31.1 million this weekend, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
The horror comedy “M3GAN” was a runner-up for the second consecutive week, grossing $17.9 million Friday through Sunday at theaters in the United States and Canada, Comscore reported.
“Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” was third with $13.4 million in its fourth week.
“A Man Called Otto,” starring Tom Hanks, was fourth with $12.6 million after expanding to more theaters in its third week of release.
The Gerard Butler-starring action film “Plane” opened with $10 million for fifth place.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “House Party” ($3.9 million), “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” ($2.18 million), “The Whale” ($1.45 million), “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” ($1.17 million) and “Waltair Veerayya” ($905,000).
This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $100 million. The year-to-date total is $352 million — an increase of 44% over the figure at this time last year, according to Comscore.
