Top 3 Ways To Soothe a Baby Who’s Distressed

Are you a parent with a fussy child? There’s more than one way to handle that sticky situation. Learn how to soothe your distressed baby here.

Raising an infant is no easy task, and it can be a jarring experience for new parents. Suddenly, your life changes, and you must do everything around your child’s schedule. Even veteran parents can feel at a loss when their babies get a bit fussy. So how do you navigate such a stressful time? Check out our top three ways you can soothe your distressed baby.

Check Their Bedding

Infants are notorious for crying late at night and waking up their parents. Newborn sleep patterns are so different from that of adults that parents typically upend their sleep schedules and alter them to match their babies’ schedules. Many factors could cause your baby to be even fussier than anticipated at night. For instance, did you know that certain bedding can prevent sound sleep?

If you find your child waking up and crying more frequently than usual or notice sores on their skin, it might be time to change the sheets. Choose a soft, breathable cotton material that’s good for sensitive skin, and you should notice a notable improvement.

Play Some Music

While lullabies are a mainstay, try several genres and see if they affect your child’s mood. Try everything—for all you know, your baby might chill out to reggae! Music calms the nervous system, especially in genres known for more soothing sounds, such as smooth jazz and blues. Experiment with different genres and musicians; the right sound might quiet your baby more quickly than you anticipated. This is a unique way to soothe a baby that’s distressed.

Record Them

If your baby seems unusually fussy, record them. Then when they start crying, play the sound back to them. While this method may seem a little strange, hearing the sound of their own fussiness can break your baby out of the crying cycle that can occur when something makes them uncomfortable. They usually don’t know what to do in this situation, giving you time to see what the problem is and solve it.

Babies will cry, but that doesn’t mean you have to suffer through it. There are ways to calm down a crying child, and we hope these tips help you do that.
