LONG BEACH, Calif. – An armed and barricaded suspect peacefully surrendered to authorities after being shot at by police Sunday.
Officers were dispatched at 10:13 a.m. to the 5200 block of East 25th Street after it was reported that a man, later identified as 55-year-old Michael Eugene Amacher of Long Beach, was pointing a gun at another person, according to Long Beach police.
The initial investigation indicated Amacher was inside a home and had pointed a gun at another person, threatening to shoot. The events that precipitated that confrontation were not immediately known.
Amacher’s relatives left the home when police arrived. Officers then set up a perimeter and located Amacher at the rear of the house holding a rifle. They ordered him to drop the gun but he refused and allegedly pointed the gun at police, prompting the officer-involved shooting, according to Long Beach police.
Amacher was not hit and retreated inside the home. Police then activated their SWAT team and told neighbors to evacuate their homes, the LBPD said. Negotiators were called to the scene but the suspect refused to surrender.
At 4:25 p.m., the SWAT team made entry into the home and took Amacher into custody, the LBPD reported. Amacher suffers from a medical condition and was taken to a hospital before being booked.
Police booked a gun and a replica gun into evidence. Anyone with information on this incident was asked to call LBPD homicide detectives at 562- 570-7244.
