Compton voters,
Alex Olvera from the Los Angeles County Registrar’s Office in Norwalk confirmed the City will definitely participate in the November 8, 2022 statewide election. Here are the ballot measures and candidates running for office in the City of Compton.
CITY OF COMPTON
The City of Compton has placed two charter change measures on the ballot.
MEASURE AM would change the city charter to reduce the number of city council meetings from four to two, claiming an increase in city efficiency which went denied by 3rd District City Councilman Jonathan Bowers. The very real effect of Measure AM will be to silence the opportunities and voice of the people. VOTE NO.
MEASURE ED would change the charter to align city elections with county elections to reduce election costs. The problem is there are now three appointed city council members (Deidre Duhart, Andre Spicer, Lillie Darden) in Districts #1, #2 and #4, correspondingly, and an appointed City Attorney Eric Perrodin. All are slated to be up for election this spring in 2023. Let’s wait until the Spring 2023 city election is conducted so that elected versus appointed persons can be placed in those seats to represent the people. Then vote to align afterwards. The language in the measure also allows “other technical changes,” all of which have not been explained or made available to the people. VOTE NO.
COMPTON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT (CUSD)
The Compton Unified School District has listed Bond Measure AAA asking for (another) $350 million to improve schools. The problem is a bond for $350 million was just passed in 2015 and bonds increase property taxes which increases rents at a difficult financial time for many homeowners and renters. VOTE NO.
COMPTON COLLEGE
Compton College has a five-member Board of Trustees. Three of its five seats will be up for election this November. Trustee Area #1 consists primarily of Lynwood and a part of council district #2 (think Walmart) in Compton. Trustee Area #4 is primarily the City of Paramount. Trustee Area #5 consists of the south side of Compton (think Compton College and industrial area near 91-freeway) plus parts of Carson.
Here are the candidates:
Area #1 – Skyy Fisher, Anthony Perry, Andres Ramos
Area #4 – Alfredo Banuelos, Juanita Doplemore
Area #5 – Sharoni Denise Little, Leticia Vasquez Wilson
EXPECT BALLOTS IN THE MAIL OCTOBER 7TH – 10TH
Mail-in ballots are targeted to be sent out on October 7th through the 10th. Walk-in locations will also be announced and available.
To reiterate, these are the Compton Measures on the ballot:
ED – Reduces election costs but steals your chance to replace a majority appointed city council with elected representatives.
AM – Reduces council meetings but silences your voice.
AAA – Passes a $350 Million School Bond but increases your taxes.
Wake up and…VOTE “NO” ACROSS THE BOARD!
