LOS ANGELES – The horror film “Barbarian” opened with $10 million at North American theaters to lead the way in another slow weekend at the box office, according to industry estimates released Sunday.
Another film making its debut, the Bollywood saga “Brahmastra Part One: Shiva,” opened in second place with $4.4 million, Comscore reported.
“Bullet Train” was third, grossing $3.2 million Friday through Sunday in its sixth week.
The No. 4 spot went to the remarkable “Top Gun: Maverick,” which grossed another $3.17 million in its 16th week of release. The sequel to 1986’s blockbuster starring Tom Cruise has grossed over $705 million in the United States and Canada — the fifth-highest total in movie history — and another $747 million internationally.
“DC League of Super-Pets” was in fifth place with $2.8 million in its seventh week in theaters.
Rounding out the top 10 domestic releases, as estimated by Comscore, were “The Invitation” ($2.6 million), “Lifemark” ($2.2 million), “Beast” ($1.8 million), “Minions: The Rise of Gru” ($1.65 million) and a re-release of 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” ($1.3 million).
This weekend’s overall three-day box office haul was estimated at $42.2 million, the lowest total of the summer. The year-to-date total is up to $5.47 billion — an increase of 139.6% over 2021’s figure, according to Comscore.
