INGLEWOOD – Inglewood elections will take place in November with the nomination period scheduled to close Friday, Aug. 12, however, considering an incumbent didn’t file to return to their seat the nomination period is extended an additional five days.
City Clerk Aisha Thompson is facing controversy for demanding potential candidates submit to a live scan (background check) before being placed on the ballot.
She is following in the footsteps of her predecessor, Yvonne Horton, of not alerting the public that an incumbent didn’t file papers and that the nomination period is extended an additional five days for that seat only.
School board member Naomi Hammonds represents seat 1 which includes the Morningside Park area where residents demanded the school district not close the last elementary school in the area.

Thompson gave remarks during the Aug. 16 regular city council meeting while taking nomination papers for “Giselle Carol Brown” who is actually former Inglewood school board member Giselle Carol Raines-Brown, a close confidant of Inglewood Mayor James Butts.
Brown was a member of the board that led IUSD into state receivership.
Thompson’s office accepted her nomination forms Aug. 16 although it is uncertain if they were received before the council meeting took place at 2pm. Either way Thompson was obligated to inform the public the nomination period was extended.
The city clerk’s website gives no indication to the public the filing period for IUSD School Board Seat #1 is still available for residents to pull papers for.
Thompson and Dionne Faulk got into their elected seats the same way. The incumbents waited until the 11th hour to not return papers and Horton never alerted the public during the council meeting the following Tuesday that the filing period was extended.
Complaints to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office were rebuffed because “they don’t prosecute misdemeanors” and referred complainants to City Attorney Ken Campos who was also appointed to his position by Butts.
Does Thompson serve Inglewood residents or Mayor Butts and his cronies? Inglewood residents made a grave mistake in electing her.

It is baffling that someone who claimed on election mailings to have 18 years of experience prepping her for the City Clerk position didn’t think about categorizing the names of those running for office.
In years past the groupings were clear Bold title of position with names of potential candidates following, and then the next position in Bold with potential candidates following that.
Yes, We can highlight with color or scribble our own lists but this kinda makes ya wonder doesn’t it ? This is the department that is responsible for public records !!!!!!!
Aisha has been already been “Deputy City Clerk” (with a salary of $80,000.00 each year + benefits) for 7 years! She reported to Yvonne Horton (wife of Jerome Horton as in State Board of Equalization for nearly 9 years, California Assembly member 6 years, and before that Inglewood Council Member.) Certainly somewhere in those long careers attention to detail and skill set should have been a topic before such grand endorsements were made!!! Yikes
This document may shed light on how serious the inappropriate hires were made during Horton’s State Board of Equalization years.. Double Yikes !!!
Don’t forget “State Board of Equalization is a fancy name for California’s Tax Department which includes use, property, income, and business taxes!!
It appears making a simple list is a challenging task, we can hope and pray there are others who are not so organizationally challenged working in the City Clerk’s Office.
Friends and Family Nepotism should not be the qualification standard for employment or election to “public service” with lifetime pensions at taxpayer expense.
Vote cautiously the life electeds impact may be yours !
She was prepped on how to disenfranchise voters and fix elections hence the increase in salary less than a year in the position. Regular city employees aren’t that fortunate.
Is there anyone out there who doesn’t think the failure to inform by Yvonne Horton about incumbents not choosing to run for office was an oversight?
Clearly it was, as this is, a move to by-pass the legitimate election process.
As for the fingerprint scan – no one, NO not anyone can even begin to justify such a request – it is simple outright, in our face foolishness.
Hello anyone checked the constitution recently (Oops sorry we know Butts does not agree with free speech, or the Miranda warning). Be that as it is NEWS FLASH the REQUIREMENTS FOR UNITED STATES PRESIDENT are
35 years of age,
Natural born Citizen of United States
14 years residency in the UNITED STATES
That’s it no fingerprint scan, no proof of vaccination, no whatever someone wants to add. THOSE three and only those three items….are the requirements that is it!!.
But somewhere, Aisha Thompson decided without charter or law change that SHE GETS TO ADD REQUIREMENTS ?? Neither she or James Butts, George Dotson, or Alex Padilla, or any prior wanna be council or school board members or city clerk or treasurer have been required to submit fingerprints. Another EGO TRIPPING….?
Wow does she have a crown on order?
When and why did she decide her choice is more important than those of the voters?
Has she decided she gets to select not only who we are permitted to cast votes for, but in the case of one seat she chose by failure to publicly announce (as the charter demands) the extension of filing dates that we have no right to options -other than the one she has selected and therefore notified of the extension?
Indeed HER CHOICE will be the representative for all of the school district decisions of one area, at a critical time when potential sales of school properties is hanging in the balance. ALL without even the pretend approval of the voters, just as she was selected when Yvonne Horton took the similar action in our previous election …..
VOTER RIGHTS is NOT ONLY about the Right to cast a ballot on Election Day, It INCLUDES HAVING LEGITIMATE OPTIONS of whom YOU CAN CHOOSE TO VOTE FOR by their names appearance on a ballot.
It is called an ELECTION !
Neither Clerk nor Mayor should be permitted to make a SELECTION.
How many wonder if they already decided the vote spread?
