LOS ANGELES – Millions of dollars in state funds were allocated Thursday to transportation projects across California, including Southland initiatives such as expanding bus service between downtown Los Angeles and Torrance and purchasing hundreds of electric buses.
According to the California State Transportation Agency, the disbursal is part of the latest round of grant awards under the Transit & Intercity Rail Capital Program, which resulted in almost $800 million being earmarked for 23 projects statewide.
The city of Torrance received $9.6 million, which will go toward the $12 million purchase of 10 zero-emission electric buses that will be used to expand service between the South Bay city and downtown Los Angeles.
The Antelope Valley Transit Authority received more than $4.8 million toward the purchase of zero-emission buses, while the city of Glendale and other neighboring agencies received more than $34 million for battery-electric buses.
Metro received a $177.5 million grant to help fund the purchase of 261 zero-emission buses and related infrastructure.
CalSTA grants are drawn from SB 1 Road Repair & Accountability Act revenue, derived from gas taxes, and cap-and-trade revenue.
