LOS ANGELES – Two teenagers are in the hospital Friday following a high-speed chase in a stolen car that ended with a man being killed in a violent multi-vehicle collision in South Los Angeles.

Alexis Covarrubias, 37, died at the scene, the Los Angeles County coroner’s office reported. Covarrubias was driving the red vehicle.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies began pursuing a copper Kia SUV sedan after units reported the vehicle driving recklessly, according to the Sheriff’s Information Bureau. The Kia crashed into a red vehicle just before 3:15 p.m. Thursday at the westbound Glenn Anderson (105) Freeway exit at Central Avenue after clipping a truck.

Various news outlets reported between four and seven vehicles were involved in the collision, but authorities could not confirm the number.

The driver and a passenger in the Kia were 14 and 15 years old, according to reports from the scene. They were also injured in the collision and handcuffed to gurneys before they were taken to a hospital.

Several vehicles sustained damaged in the crash.

Witnesses told deputies the suspects were weaving in and out of traffic during the chase.

The SUV was reported stolen from Compton last week.

Fox 11 reports there were no other injuries due to the collision.

Los Angeles County Firefighters were called to remove the suspects from the mangled SUV using hydraulic tools.

“It took fire quite some time to get them out the vehicle,” said Assistant Sheriff of Patrol Operations Bruce Chase.

The westbound Glenn Anderson Freeway off-ramp at Central Avenue was closed for the California Highway Patrol and sheriff’s department to investigate the crash.

Anyone with information on the crash was encouraged to call the CHP at 213-744-2331. Anonymous tips can be called in to Crime Stoppers at 800-222- 8477 or submitted online at lacrimestoppers.org.
