LOS ANGELES – The Leimert Park Juneteenth Festival is a free event that will three stages and performances by Masego, Alex Isley, and Kenyon Dixon on June 19.
The festival is to commemorate the day slaves in Texas were freed.
June 19, 1865, is when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as “Juneteenth,” by the newly freed people in Texas.

This action came two years after President Abraham Lincoln ended slavery.
Amazon Music‘s Rotation, “a new home for hip-hop and R&B,” collaborated with event producer Still Rising Corporation to curate the lineup; performances by Buddy, Masego and Smino will proceed on the main, “Live on Leimert” stage. The collaboration is the latest effort of “Credit the Culture,” a celebration of Black Music Month from Rotation + Amazon Music.
Still Rising was created in September 2021 by Alfred Toregano, who doubles as General Manager for the Miracle Theatre in Inglewood, CA.
The lineup includes Masego, Buddy and Smino. Amazon Music’s latest activation is part of its “Credit The Culture” campaign, which celebrates Black Music Month.
