At its regular meeting on May 16, 2022, the Compton Community College District Board of Trustees approved Resolution No. 05-16-2022 to forgive outstanding student enrollment fees from summer 2021 through spring 2022. Any Compton College students, except out-of-country students, with outstanding fees from that time specific period do not have to pay back these unpaid student accounts. The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted students’ ability to pay enrollment fees, including tuition fees, fees, and other institutional charges. The American Rescue Plan of 2021 allows higher education institutions to use the institutional portion of ARP to waive/cancel students’ unpaid enrollment fees from summer 2021 to spring 2022. Included in the enrollment fees will be Student Activities fees, enrollment fees, student representation fees, and health fees for all students.
“The Compton Community College District is thankful for the provisions in the 2021 American Rescue Plan that enable us to remove some barriers for Compton College students created by the COVID-19 pandemic, including relieving students of any enrollment fees debt so students may continue their higher education and enroll at Compton College for fall 2022,” said Sonia Lopez, Compton Community College District Board of Trustees president.
In addition, California Governor Gavin Newsom and state legislators are to be commended for providing provisions under AB 132 – Postsecondary education trailer bill to implement significant California Comeback Plan investments in college affordability and access – specifically the language in AB 132 that allows for us to waive the fees of students that are unpaid due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
