In the wake of a tragic shooting in January of this year that took the lives of four young people at an unsupervised gathering in an unhosted Short-Term Rental (STR), Inglewood Mayor James Butts promised to usher in “very strict” STR regulations to protect Inglewood residents. Mayor Butts promised the City of Inglewood’s STR regulations would be “even better than Santa Monica’s.”
On June 14, 2022, the Inglewood Housing Protection Department unveiled its proposed regulations. These regulations would permit unsupervised, unhosted STRs; the very same circumstances from which Mayor Butts promised to protect Inglewood.
Inglewood’s proposed regulations would allow for unhosted STRs at non-primary residences to be used as STRs year-round. That means that any Inglewood resident may find themselves living next door to a an STR operating seven days a week, 365 days of the year, at a property dedicated to STR use without a resident to supervise. These are not the regulations that Mayor Butts promised Inglewood.
In contrast, the City of Santa Monica’s regulations ensure that guests are supervised and not allowed to create dangerous situations for themselves or their surrounding neighbors by prohibiting unhosted STRs. During public comment earlier this year, Better Neighbors LA urged the City of Inglewood to adopt the Santa Monica standard of regulations and require all STRs be hosted and supervised by a local resident. In response, Mayor Butts said that the City of Inglewood would do “even better” than Santa Monica. Since Mayor Butts made this promise, the need for action has only grown more salient. This summer, the nation has seen a rash of mass public shootings at an accelerating rate. From schools, to concerts, to parties, large public gatherings of people are increasingly targeted for gun violence. Inglewood must not now leave its residential neighborhoods vulnerable to more of the mass violence it experienced this past January.
Better Neighbors LA urges the residents of Inglewood to reach out to the City Council and demand it fulfill Mayor Butt’s promise. Inglewood deserves STR regulations that will prevent more deadly violence; Inglewood should prohibit all unhosted STRs throughout the city.

Clearly Better Neighbors LA have not done their homework….. any one who watches the actions of the Inglewood City Council would know not to take them at their word to protect the community.
Simply put – he who trust James Butts to do that which is right will be sorely disappointed.
This man lies and the other four do exactly what he tells them, no independent thinking permitted.
The actions this group have taken should show us that their goal is to eliminate community for the sake of dollars for billionaires no matter how residents are impacted
